Julia Britton was born Hilda Hartt in Romily, Cheshire on June 27, 1914. She worked as a journalist in South Africa and a university teacher in South Australia before she becoming a playwright.  Her popular plays have been staged throughout Australia, including Sydney's New Theatre and Griffin Theatre, in Perth at The Blue Room, in Melbourne at Melbourne Theatre Company, The Butterfly Club, St. Martin’s Theatre, La Mama Theatre, Performing Arts Productions, Fly-On-The-Wall Theatre, Chameleon Theatre and Theatreworks together with workshops at Malthouse Theatre Company. In Adelaide at Studio 62, South Australian Writer’s Theatre, Stage Company, Budgie Lung and playreadings at State Theatre of South Australia.

Julia's most celebrated play Miles Franklin and the Rainbow’s End was chosen for performance at the San Antonio Festival in Texas, produced by Stage Company and was again produced at La Mama followed in 2000 with new productions at Theatreworks as part of the Midsumma Festival and The Blue Room as part of the inaugural WA Fringe Festival.

She won the AWGIE Monte Miller Award in 1982 for Exits and Entrances and was nominated for a Green Room Award in 1995 for her short play In Transit. Julia is one of Australia's most prolific and produced playwrights.
